ABOUT DR. NAVEED Baqir
COMMUNITY
Naveed Baqir, PhD, is a systems architect, software engineer, and community activist. He was a public elementary school teacher during the late 1990s and has taught at the University of Delaware and other universities. He has a passion for education and a mission to support every child through empowering education at the K-12 level and beyond. He has come from humble beginnings of public schooling where even the basic schooling needs such as a classroom, a chair, and a desk were not available to him until junior high. He completed his high school with distinction and after earning graduate degrees in Technology Management in 2004 and Business Administration in 2005 from Eastern Illinois University, he earned his Ph.D. in information systems from the University of North Carolina in 2009.
In late 2019, he helped formalize the structure of Friends of Christina School District (FOCSD), a nonprofit that advocates for the Christina School District. He was instrumental in successfully bringing in $150,000 in grants to Christina School District that were used to provide technologyand safety equipment for teachers and students at Christina. He has served on the Citizens Budget Oversight Committee (CBOC) and referendum steering committee that successfully won the referendum in a landslide during 2020.
Dr. Naveed's experience as a public school teacher, as well as teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, gives him real-world experience that will guide him to be an effective school board member. Naveed is currently serving as the vice president of People to People International, Delaware Chapter, board member of Peace Drums, and has served as an instrumental founding member of several local institutions including Tarbiyah School which has distributed more than 2 million meals to children across New Castle County since the start of the pandemic.
Through his vast community involvement and serving on several volunteer committees and boards, Dr. Naveed has the leadership experience and has fostered multiple community connections that are needed to get things moving. Rallying people is his strength and his track record of taking action speaks for itself.
Dr. Naveed’s perspective allows him to reach minority communities that are typically not engaged in District affairs. Considering that our District is a minority-majority, it leaves a huge opportunity for fresh ideas to bring about positive change through community involvement.
Dr. Naveed's leadership, connection, and commitment to the community will invigorate action on the issues that are so important to each and every one of us.
